Getting "Twitter-pated"

Twitter is even simpler than Facebook, which is why it’s starting to receive as much buzz as Facebook. Like the “What’s on your mind?” box on Facebook, you can put a short description (140 characters or less) of what you’re doing or what’s on your mind. You can do this from your computer or phone. And that’s pretty much it. The information can then be sent via web to others’ Twitter pages, or, most commonly, as cell phone text messages.

Like Facebook, you can find people, or they can find you. In the case of Twitter, they “follow” you and/or you follow them. The more “followers” you have, the better your online exposure.

Celebrities like Ashton Kutcher have a lot of followers because for some reason, people care about all the mundane things he does. But does anyone care that YOU just bought a new hat? Hate to break it to you, but probably not. Like your Facebook wall, the way to get the most out of Twitter is to post interesting, useful or thought-provoking “tweets”.

You can integrate Twitter and Facebook so you can just update people with Facebook. Just sign up for Twitter, under "Settings" there's a field for "More info" URL. Under that, there's a link that says "You can also add Twitter to your site here". Click on that to get to the Facebook/Twitter integration app.

My personal opinion is that nothing replaces good old fashioned face-to-face networking. But if you can find a way to make your tweets as a way to invite customers to consider utilizing your business over your competitors, or just get together with old friends for coffee, you have found the key to social networking.
